Cadets

Heswall Detachment of Merseyside Army Cadet Force has a proud affiliation with Heswall Royal British Legion as the only community based detachment left on the Wirral and has been based out of the Heswall Royal British Legion since 2012. The Heswall Detachment was previously based in Irby Village after moving from Milner Cop where the detachment was for several decades. The detachment has always supported the British Legion's Poppy Appeal by being present for all events collecting over £1000.00 per year.

At the detachment we train young people to follow the values and standards of the British Army by teaching them skills such as navigation, drill, skill of arms, field craft, radios and team work. We also provide opportunities to go on adventure training courses which run all year round as well as a Canadian Exchange programme. There are also opportunities to do the Duke of Edinburgh Award and several BTEC qualifications to help our young people further their education and experience. During Christmas time the British Legion also holds the detachments annual Regimental dinner where the cadets have a three course sit down meal followed by a party.

If being a cadet interests you come to the Heswall Legion on any Tuesday or Thursday from 7.30pm and speak to either Mark or Jamie, they will be happy to help.

Colour Sergeant Fisher (Detachment Commander)

Colour Sergeant Fisher started as an adult instructor at the Heswall Detachment 11 years ago, he was reassigned for advanced training and ran a unit elsewhere before returning to take command at Heswall. "I was born and raised in Heswall and attended a cadet unit nearby so understand the values and standards it instils in youth development and the need for it in the local area and community. It's incredibly important to be actively involved and committed in shaping young peoples lives and futures."

Sergeant Kershaw (Detachment Instructor and 2IC)

Sergeant Kershaw has been an instructor for 10 years; Eight of which is based at Heswall Detachment and has helped guide many cadets into adult life. "I enjoy my work with the cadets, it is nice to know that I've give up a fraction of my time to help guide young adults. I've helped cadets apply for university, the armed forces and apprenticeships. Whatever they see in their future I'm happy to help them with, so they can achieve their dreams and be the best they can be."
